Simply leave your squads behind at a nearby beacon. Then engage the boss alone with your force commander. If you play on Easy, it shouldn't be a problem you might need to use a healing or two. it can be done on any difficulty since you can always leave the boss area and heal up, It best to do this one early, ie mission 3 or 4, but any enemy with a large red health meter counts.
