The fastest and easiest way to make money fast is to get Cloud's Apocalypse and Cid's Scimitar, fill up every slot with All materia, and then fight enemies that drop high AP. A fully mastered All materia will sell for a whopping 1,400,000 gil. The best spot to grind out AP is in the North Cave. When you have to split up, take the left path, and when you come to the second split point, go up. In this area you will encounter Magic Pots, which drop 1,000 AP each, although you have to use Elixirs on them in order to kill them. Of course, if you have the W-Item materia, you can make use of the glitch to replenish your Elixirs. You select W-Item, select an Elixir, then select a target. When it comes to selecting the second item, select your target but then immediately press cancel. Keep selecting and cancelling until the number of elixirs is 99 then cancel out all the way.
