While equipped, if an enemy hits you with a certain skill, you will learn it and be able to use it as long as you're equipped with the Enemy Skill Materia. You can keep track of the enemy skills Cloud has learned by pressing
in combat and selecting "Abilities", any enemy skills that you've learned which are listed below using this materia will be listed within that section.
There are four enemy skills to be learned, and recommendations on where and how to obtain them:
1. Spirit Siphon
Learned from Phantom when it uses Essence Drain. Found in:
Chapter 14. ("Missing Children" side-quest, you will fight a group of these at the cemetery and it is easy to obtain)
Chapter 16 & 17. Shinra Tower VR Simulations. Found in the four-star challenges "Cloud/Tifa/Barrett/Aerith vs. SOLDIER Trainees".
2. Self-Destruct
Learned from Varghidpolis or Proto Trypapolis (summoned by Trypapolis) when they use Apoptosis. Found in:
Chapter 14. Random encounters in the Collapsed Expressway.
Chapter 16 & 17. Shinra Tower VR Simulations. Found in the four-star challenge "Three-Person Team vs. Team Ragbag".
Learned from Bomb when it uses Apoptosis. Found in:
Chapter 9 & 14. The Colosseum "Two-Person Team vs. Team Payback" challenge.
Chapter 17 Hard Mode. A new set of Shinra VR Simulations will be available in Hojo's Lab. Found in the "Three-Person Team vs. Monsters of Legend" challenge.
Learned from Smogger when it uses Self-Destruct. Found in:

3. Algid Aura

4. Bad Breath
