What a fantastic experience for my October game. As a teenager, I played a Resident Evil title (1, 2, 3 or 4) every October to celebrate the spooky season. I decided to revive that tradition this year with Resident Evil 0. I was not disappointed.

Graphically, the game is dated. Each area is a "scene" with no real option to adjust the camera. This can make playing the game, particularly during combat, difficult at times, but the graphics are solid compared to some other titles from this era. The iteration I played and reviewed seems to be a port from the original GameCube title from the early 2000s. Graphics could've been better, but they're fairly decent for the era. (6/10)

The controls are also somewhat dated. It took me about an hour to get comfortable with the control scheme. I haven't played a Resident Evil title in over a decade, so I felt like a fish out of water at first. I used a DualShock 4 for this game, as I do with most of my games. Making minor adjustments as I went seemed to help, but ultimately, the default scheme worked fine for my purposes. (6/10)

The sound really shines here. In an otherwise dated game, the guttural moans of zombies, the bang of the weapons, and the screams of Billy and Rebecca pulled it together. Music is minimal, but high quality where presented. The atmospheres blend quite well with the overall experience. (9/10)

Storywise, it doesn't do anything particularly new and innovating for a Resident Evil title. You're trying to get to your destination and defeat zombies along the way. You kill the big bad in the end. It's so formulaic that if I were to rate it, it would diminish the score of an otherwise alright game. I'll just say "standard." The overall story is enjoyable, but it isn't innovative. The formula definitely shines in this genre, though.

Overall, I'm glad I chose Resident Evil 0 to revive my October tradition. I'll be looking forward to completing the rest of the series overall, and I can't wait to own more games in this franchise. (7/10)
