When you becomes a Paladin your level is reseted back to level 1 and Cecil will stink in combat. However he will level up fast and becomes good again, you should reach abot level 7 after surviving the first combat and then after another 3 fights or so You should reach level 10. So unless you warp down from the mount ordeals you will have it on your way back down.
