Wow I'm blown away by this awesome game. Wavetale has such a great story, beautiful artwork, but the best of it all... how good and fun the game feels to play. I felt like a kid on a playground, speeding up, jumping around, and crashing back into the water.. it has been a while since I felt that in a game, and the last game that did that for me was Haven, which also shares a bit of the theme with Wavetale.

You play as Sigrid in a very dark and doomed (but still beautiful-looking) world, where there is not much hope for the future. You live together with your grandma on a small island till one day the bad guys attack and everything takes a turn for the worst. You two decide to fight back and do everything you can to save the world.

What made this game so awesome to play where the movements, you move around with so much speed and can kinda do tricks while surfing to the next destination. And you never have to guess where to go as a marker will show you the way, which I prefer over being lost and having to find it for yourself. This game was all about the story and the experience this game is.

The only downside I noticed is the saving system. Maybe it saved so quickly, but I never was sure when the game had saved and when it was safe to quit the game. There is no manual system and you might lose progress if you quit randomly. Maybe add a loading symbol and if it is there but just saves instantly.. maybe let the animation idle for like 5 seconds or so? I figured out that when reaching the new destination for the story and after the cutscene it had saved.. kinda before the cutscene but I happily go through that quickly again than losing my progress. One weird thing I noticed is that one time the game just had forgotten a sidequest I had before quitting the game, gladly I knew which one it was and I just hadn't completed it.

About those side quests, they aren't required for the achievements, so you can ignore them totally if you want, but they give the characters a bit more depth, and most of the time the objective you have to find is very close by. Most of the achievements are for completing the main storyline. There are 4 achievements for 4 different races, those might be the most challenging ones in this game. Most of them were still very doable, I only had to retry the last one like 10 times because I just missed it, or made a wrong jump. Gladly the game has a very easy restart the race option, no hassle with going back to the start or waiting till the timer runs out. The last achievement is hearing all the jokes the shopkeeper makes, this just requires you to start a conversation with him about 10/15 times.

I want to end this review with a message for the developers:
Please give us the chance to do the hard work that is required next! I would love to get a sequel :D This game is easily in my top 5 games of 2022, but maybe even in the top 3. There are 2 more contenders for 2022 that I'll try to play before the end of this year.
