Six Days of Snow is a visual novel, developed by ebi-hime, and published by the Sekai Project. Released back at the end of December, I was extremely excited to come across this game now in February, ebi-hime being one of my favourite game developers. Having done games such as Once on a windswept night, The Sad Story of Emmeline Burns, and Lily of the Valley, they’re a fan favourite in visual novels, and Six Days of Snow continues their wonderfully beautiful streak of games.

Six Days of Snow is a visual novel based in the snowy mountains of Japan, where a once famous poet ends up forming a very unlikely relationship with the daughter of his inn’s proprietress.

First starting this, I thought the audio work was really well done. It suited the tone of the novel, dark, but with a traditional Japanese sound, it really suited the tone of the dark, twisting mountains of the Japanese highlands, and it caught me off guard with just how beautiful it was. Unfortunately, I’m not one for listening to game music when playing, so this was all I heard before I turned it off, but that one little glimpse into it really makes me definite that the audio quality is kept up throughout the whole game.

    Main Story Line

The first day of this, and the first story introduction to the player really took my breath away. The designs of the game are done absolutely spectacularly. There is nothing more that you I personally look forward to in ebi-hime games more than the visuals, and the visuals in this game knocked it out of the park once again. With the character designs seeming to look a tiny bit rough in my opinion, the visuals are a solid 4.5 / 5 for myself; they’re never a disappointment.
However, I feel like the snow aesthetic might have been taken a little over board. The end of each speech section being punctuated with a snow flake, the falling snow behind the screen every second, the general theme of the whole game feels cold. I understand it’s meant to be snow related, but I feel like they just went a tiny bit too overboard with it.
Other than that, I have no quarrel with the visuals and the aesthetics of this game, and it’s all done really, really well.

Without spoilers, I feel like the story is quite Lolita-esque in writing but it’s still written so beautifully. The story of and older man being bewitched and fallen for a young girl, 20 years his younger, and a girl enamoured with him due to certain reasons. The writing in this is utterly stunning, which is good considering this has no choice bases – purely, this is an interactive book to read. There aren’t many of these I find entertaining and that really drag me in, but the writing in this is so beautiful, and it’s so respectful of Japanese culture, I found myself reading each frame, and not skipping through as per usual for games like this.

The ending to this was so poetically romantic I found tears welling up in my eyes. This is truly another amazing story from ebi-hime, so poetic and enchanting, I couldn’t put this down until I absolutely had to. I’m so happy to have been able to read this, and it’s left me wanting even more from ebi-hime.

    Epilogue

The epilogue to Six Days of Snow was as beautiful as the original story, albeit, much happier. A coming of age short read, that made my heart clench and left me with a tear stained smiled, I finished this story-game off with a sense of nostalgia, and a happiness within my heart. The writing, again, so utterly beautiful, I just couldn’t turn away from it, finishing it in one sitting and running over on the time I allocated aside for this visual novel. There’s something so startingly beautiful of this final chapter to the story, I’m sad that it’s now over. Although it closed up fully, and there’s no really anything for it to continue on, I can’t help but wishing ever so slightly that there might be a sequel or continuation to this story.

    Overall

Overall, this was such a beautiful visual novel, I’m left speechless, and I doubt my review could do this novel justice. All I can say is, if you’re a visual novel lover, to definitely read this through. It’s definitely worth the read, and even if you don’t like it, you can just skip through it in about 5 minutes to get all the achievements.

I’m definitely glad I took the time to read another ebi-hime visual novel; anything by them is definitely worth the hour or two it takes to read through.
