If you’re thinking about getting this awesome game, let me start with a piece of personal advice to start with the first Nexomon game in this series. You can find my review for that one
here . Nexomon: Extinction is a direct sequel to the first game and the story continues here, taking place 10 years later.
The main reason I highly suggest starting with the first one is that the story is the best part of both Nexomon games. There are a lot of puns and 4th wall-breaking jokes but that doesn’t get in the way of an in-depth story.
This is a monster collecting game in the style of Pokémon. A lot of people will compare it to Pokémon and it does have a lot of similarities, but in my opinion, this game isn’t a clone as it adds a few twists in comparison to Pokémon.
As I've already pointed out, Nexomon has an amazing story, which I just haven’t seen in the Pokémon games that I have played over the years. This game has a mechanism that it increases the catch chance by a lot if you first feed the Nexomon you are attempting to catch and after you have thrown the trap, you'll have an optional minigame in which you have to push a few buttons in order in 5 seconds. Each button you have correctly hit increases the chances of catching the Nexomon.
Another difference is that the Nexomons that roam in the wild get higher in level. That means that when you first encounter them, they are around level 5 but if you go back to earlier maps later on in the story, those Nexomons are just a few levels lower than your highest Nexomon.
I would highly suggest to first play the game for its story and catch what you can but don’t go out of your way to find them all yet. Most Nexomon have 3 tiers and at certain points of the story, the Nexomon from that tier can be found on all the maps in the wild (the earlier tiers of Nexomon will stay available on those maps too).
You’ll get a few tools that will increase the chance to catch them and you'll get the option to buy the best food which every Nexomon likes instead of having to have the right food type for the full effect.
The developer is still actively worked on the game. It did release with some small bugs and the rating to find mega rare Nexomon was very low but the developer has listened to the players and improved the game a lot in the past few weeks since its release. For example; there are now ways to share experience between non-fighting Nexomons; this was highly requested. There have also been new items added to the game to restore a bit of health or stamina after each fight.
Most of the achievements are for beating the game and catching all the Nexomons. There are a few others for selling ores and have gathered X amount of money during the game but those are not missable and not that hard to achieve.
I've really enjoyed this game a lot and so, I highly suggest getting it, if you like monster collecting games.
