    DLC Quest [Review By Uzzbuzz]

DLC Quest is a 2d platformer game that parodies the time where it seems like so much content in games is blocked by dlc. Despite it being a parody game, it is enjoyable for a little bit. The player is tasked with collecting coins to buy dlc packs to progress further in the game, to ultimately save the girl.

Mechanics/Gameplay – The mechanic of not having much to start with and having to buy it with in-game currency is an interesting mechanic, but it is one I’ve seen before. The basic controls of the game, once you buy them, are jumping, double jumping, melee and ranged attack. There is no health in this game so the weapons are merely for killing certain creatures for an achievement, or “awardment”. There is nothing outstanding about the controls, and the sole interesting feature is being able to buy everything, from music, to being allowed to pause the game, to horse armor. This game is not for the hardcore platformer. 4.5/10

Fun Factor – Ehhh, maybe for the first 20 minutes or so. This game is very short. If you’re slow, a playthrough of the main game will take around 30 minutes. I enjoyed the concept at first, but once I got to the ‘dlc’, which is not actually dlc, I was already a bit bored of the game. 3.5/10

Graphics/Animation – What can I say? The graphics are alright; nothing very exciting, but not horrible either. DLC Quest has sprite graphics in a cartoonish form.

You have to buy the animation pack in-game, but it really does not add much. The animations are maybe a couple of frames, if that. You will not really notice them at all.

Though the graphics are nothing outstanding, and you do not even really get to upgrade them, they are consistent throughout and not too eye-burning. 6/10

Music/Sound – Most of the time you’re playing this, you will not even have the sound on at all. This is because you have to buy the music, but buying it interferes with many speedrun strategies, which is where most of the time spent on this game is.

For what it is, the music is a simple retro loop, that plays throughout the whole game, including the credits. It is a very simple loop but at least it isn’t ear piercing right? As for the sound effects, they just seem used from a standard platformer library, which is fine, but you hear these sounds all over the place. 5/10

Replayability – You are very likely only going to play this more than once if you are attempting the speedrun achievement, which is fairly challenging. The goal is for beating the game in 12 minutes, and a similar goal is established for the ‘dlc’. It may take you a couple hours to do this for each of the two speedruns, but really, there is not much to keep you playing this game after that. 3/10

Level Design – The level design in DLC quest is alright. It lends itself to pathing a bit for speedruns, which makes the achievement feel a little bit more involved, but there is not a whole lot to the levels. There are some secret areas that you can get to by walking through walls that do not have a complete outline, but other than that it is a pretty standard 2d platformer map. 5/10

Achievements – Most of the achievements are somewhat story related so I’ll only cover them briefly. The achievements award fairly evenly throughout the progression to 100% completion which is really well done, and they are for varied tasks too.

For the achievements that do not fall into 100% game completion, and are more miscellaneous, we have one for killing every npc and sheep, some of which are hidden. I would save this one for later as you can kill important npcs for the 100%. For the free dlc, there is an achievement for ‘trying to cheat’, which is just a code you type really fast; nothing fancy. The interesting and more difficult achievements fall into the speedrun category. There are two: one each for the main game and the dlc. They are interesting because the game does not feel like a speedrun game at all, yet these are still moderately difficult achievements. A bit out of place, but they work for added replay value and challenge, without being too frustrating. 6/10

    Pros:
    + Humor is amusing
    + Surprisingly a challenge for 100%

    Cons:
    - Short
    - Loses the fun factor quickly

    Overall Score: 4.7/10
    2.5
