Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a competent but completely remarkable JRPG. Based on some sort of comic property I’ve never read, it doesn’t really matter; the game does a reasonable enough job of introducing and showing off the characters.

The party is shot down in a strange land, and has to make their way through it, while dealing with some mysterious enemy forces along the way. There’s not a whole lot to the game as a JRPG; it has fairly basic turn-based combat, with the only real “twist” being that doing basic attacks builds up a sort of secondary mana reserve, which you use before you use your “real” mana. There’s not a whole lot to be said here; the combat is reasonably challenging, but it is also possible to overlevel if you aren’t careful and make stuff really easy. There’s some in-game difficulty selection, with you able to play each dungeon on three progressively harder difficulty levels, and you can skip ahead to the harder ones if you want to.

Unfortunately, the game itself is a bit bland gameplay wise. It doesn’t really do anything to mix up the JRPG formula all that much, and the overall plot of the game is pretty meh. There’s a fair bit of dungeon crawling, none of which is particularly remarkable, and there’s some reasonable enemy variety, but they’re nothing you’ve never seen before.

This is kind of the game as a whole. The game is visually polished, and mechanically works just fine, it just doesn’t really do anything remarkable in any way at any point.

    So what is the point?

I’m not really sure. Do you really want to spend dozens of hours on a game that’s merely run of the mill?

I’d rather play something that is more actively fun. This is just kind of a thing to do.
