Middle-earth: Shadow of War Patch Removes Microtransactions

By Rebecca Smith,
Four months ago, developer Monolith Productions revealed they would be introducing a large patch to Middle-earth: Shadow of War that would remove microtransactions and update the Shadow Wars section of the game, amongst other things. Patch 14 has now arrived and has also improved character customisation and the nemesis system, and added more character skins.

The market and all of the microtransactions have now been completely removed from the game. Players can recruit Orcs through Online Vendettas. The in-game currency, Mirian, is now used to train, upgrade and customise any of the Orcs you've recruited, and your Ranked Conquests can be found in the Garrison.

Shadow Wars is now known as the Epilogue, reflecting the fact it's supposed to be the post-campaign content, and the mode has been streamlined at the same time. Once the campaign's credits roll, players will still be able to upgrade and defend fortresses and armies. There is new narration in the mode from Shelob, the Witch-king, and Dark Talion. Those who are victorious in the Epilogue will be rewarded with Masks of the Nazgûl, which grant abilities to raise the dead, place curses on enemies, and even summon powerful monsters.

In terms of character customisation and builds, Monolith has increased the follower level cap to 80 and the enemy Captain level cap to 85. There are new Prestige Skills that offer upgrades to existing skills. Mirian can be used to upgrade gear by completing an upgrade challenge, and gear upgrades can be re-rolled if you choose. New players skins are available: Celebrimbor and Dark Eltariel.

Finally, Nemesis Missions, Online Conquests and defeating captains all give out increased XP rewards to help level up quicker. Speaking of those Nemesis Missions, there are now more Legendary Orcs in the game, as well as more ways to get normal and Legendary Training Order. Followers can now give their players gifts, and there's the option to turn off the Savior feature if you choose.
