Another free to play title in the ever growing list of the popular idle clicker genre, Insanity Clicker is the first horror inspired entry to come along. This review will not entail general clicker styled gameplay information, as this one is a near identical clone to the more popular Clicker Heroes, but rather it will focus on what does make it different. If you've never played a clicker game before, that research will be up to you.

Any true horror fan will find pleasure in both the quantity and quality of Insanity Clicker's backgrounds and enemies. They're lavishly detailed and generally they're inspired by a plethora of popular horror franchises, both in the realm of movies and games; there are nods to Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Trick or Treat, Hellraiser, Leprechaun, and Splatterhouse just to name a very few. I haven't counted how many types of each there are, but I have made it well past level 3000 multiple times and I can say that the backgrounds do not loop often enough for them to feel stale even after that extensive point.

Your currency are teeth, and your premium "find some but buy the rest" upgrades are green crystals. There are 35 minions for you to unlock and level up, each more treacherous than the last; some include odes to Donnie Darko, H.P. Lovecraft, and Cenobites. When you reach a point where you feel like you cannot go any further, you can choose to get Amnesia to reset the entire game, and spend your Sins that you gain afterward on upgrading your illnesses (traits); such as Agorophobia which reduces the amount of enemies per level, Depression that lowers bosses health, and Sadism that increase click damage, there are 19 in total. Randomly you will find botflies and briefcases as you progress, which contain upgrades, gear pieces, teeth, and crystals.

What does set this title apart from a lot of other clicker games is that it has been recently updated with PVP online play. It's a simple feature, where you click on circles of the other person's avatar and the person with the highest score (most clicks + better accuracy) at the end wins. You can level up doing this, two wins (stars) nets you the next level, though if you lose a match you lose a star. There's also an in-game chat if you so choose to partake; otherwise it's easily hidden with the click of a button. Another unique feature is the ability to dress your avatar, and there's a total of 8 slots to use to deck your character out; although in my experience gear is rare to come by.

Even though Insanity Clicker isn't extremely innovative or different, the attention to detail in the artwork is outstanding. It's fun for a while, but like any other game of the same genre it gets tired rather quickly. Unfortunately, the new PVP doesn't help to spice things up either as it seems to be in favor of RNG as to the position and frequency of the circles. Nevertheless, it's a decent idle game to pass the time while you're asleep, at work, watching a movie, or otherwise preoccupied and want to work toward some Steam achievements. Some people have found crashing issues, and problems with currency count, but I haven't had any problems in the 16 hours and 3,000+ levels (at one time) that I've spent with the game. Fans of horror will definitely appreciate all of the cultural references as well.
