Wallpaper Engine adds abilities to our desktop that all aesthetic lovers have been craving; from full blown videos, to gifs, webpages, and even interactive apps. Although the software is currently in an Early Access state, it's completely functional, easy to use for beginners, and has enough depth for advanced users. Not to rely solely on their own purchase enabled creations, the developer has allowed both free and monetized Steam Workshop submissions

Right now, there are tens of thousands of Steam Workshop items available for your viewing pleasure, everything from game-centric animated wallpapers, to pixel art gifs, anime babes, music videos, and so much more. While the vast majority of these are free, there is the off chance that some will become monetized in the future, as there is an option when you submit your work to have it voted on for monetization. Let's hope that this doesn't become a standard thing for Wallpaper Engine's beautifully wide spectrum of available content.

I am by no means an expert at making wallpapers, creating 3D animations, or anything of the sort, but even I found Wallpaper Engine's creation tools very easy to pick up and use. Your work can also come equipped with sound, which can then be either enjoyed or muted by the user when it is downloaded. There's really a sense of endless potential here, especially for those who are more skillfully inclined to create such works of art. From a user standpoint, the interface is also simplistic, and it houses all of your subscribed-to submissions in one place, with ease-of-access buttons such as upvote, downvote, and unsubscribe, all right at your fingertips without having to go back in to the Workshop.

The only time that Wallpaper Engine shows that it is "running" on your Steam profile is when you have its interface open. When the software is minimized to the taskbar and running in the background, it just sits there and does its thing without notifying your friends. As well, if you are worried that the extra tug on your RAM is going to hinder your gaming experience, the wallpapers are easily removed with the touch of a button, or you can even choose to have them paused when your desktop is not your focus. In fact, the entire operation can be shut down in just a few clicks until you're ready to run it again, and if you would like for Wallpaper Engine to start up with Windows, there's a tickbox for that too.

Genuinely one of the most impressive pieces of software I've seen in ages, my only regret about Wallpaper Engine is that I didn't purchase it sooner. The asking price of $4.49 CAD feels like pennies for the content that you gain access to, and quite honestly there's something in the Workshop for everyone. Even though everyone and their grandmother can submit to the Steam Workshop, it's not completely over-saturated with bad content, there's some amazing and stunning work in there to behold. If your desktop needs a facelift and you're sick of seeing the same stagnant backgrounds, then go ahead and throw down the few bucks it costs to support this software. So long as the developer doesn't get money hungry and lock everything behind a pay wall, this will remain as one of the best softwares on Steam for a very long time.

Rating: 5.0/5.0 - An astonishing achievement. This game must be played.
