From developer and publisher King Crow Studios comes the 90s style shooter game, Quest of Souls. This is purely a demo to the actual game and features one level and three achievements. At the time of writing this review, the full game is not yet available.

It’s important to note straight away that there is a note on this demo, where King Crow informs us that the “demo is a very early version of the combat mechanics” and that they are “currently working on a full demo that represents an actual level of the game”.

Going into this, the controls take a moment to get used to. It’s simply WASD to move, mouse to click and then 1 and 2 are hot keys for powers. There were quite a few things that King Crow didn’t tell us before the game, and I had to figure them out quickly, and that was rather annoying.

This demo really isn’t that much fun. I merely played it over and over for the achievements. Three achievements, under an hour of game play, and it’s done with. I didn’t enjoy this as much as I was hoping. I didn’t quite know what to expect, but it turns out to be a lot of repetition. It’s the exact same level over and over again. I was expecting maybe one or two levels, especially as this features a boss, and it was a little bit of a let down.

I don’t think this is a good demo to introduce the game to try and get people to buy it. Based purely on this demo, I don’t want to buy the game, and have no interest in following it up. It was a nice little shooter to burn some time, but it’s not amazingly brilliant.

With the repetition and everything, it’s easily completed, and there’s nothing much more to say about it. I wouldn’t really recommend this, unless you’re an achievement hunter. Forty minutes of game play, and I’ve completed it already.
