Getting a Gold Chocobo can take a long time... if you don't know what you're doing. Even if you get all the hints from the Chocobo Sage, it still does not make it easier. You have to understand the mechanics of chocobo breeding. Chocobo catching is covered early on after leaving Midgar as you need one to cross the marsh in order to evade the Midgar Zolom. This is where you receive the Chocobo Lure materia, which you need equipped in order to encounter chocobos.

You won't be able to keep any chocobos or breed them until the portion of the game equivalent to Disc 2, after beating Jenova in the Whirlwind Maze. After this point, you can return to the Chocobo Farm and be able to rent chocobo stables. You will need all 6, and they cost 10,000 gil each. You will first need to catch a Great Chocobo of both genders, and a Good Chocobo of both genders. The best greens for catching Chocobos are Reagan Greens which can only be bought from the Chocobo Sage (near the Icicle Inn).

Good Chocobos can be found southeast of North Coral and the Gold Saucer. They are fairly common. Great Chocobos, on the other hand, can be found to the west of Mideel, but aren't found in every chocobo encounter. So, it will take longer to find a Great Chocobo of each gender. Once you have a male and female Great Chocobo and and a male and female Good Chocobo, you will next need to feed them roughly 40 Sylkis Greens each. These greens can only be bought from the Chocobo Sage and cost a whopping 5,000 gil EACH.

Next, head on to the Gold Saucer and go to the Chocobo Square and race your chocobos. You will need to raise them all to Class B. You need to win around three matches each to go up a rank. Once this is does, you will need three Carob Nuts. These can be obtained by either stealing them or winning them in battle with the enemy that looks like a big red dinosaur, and can be found near Bone Village. They are not too tough but have a huge amount of HP or some reason.

Head back to the Chocobo Farm and SAVE YOUR GAME. You will now need to breed your Good Chocobos with your Great Chocobos using a Carob Nut. You should now have a Blue (river) Chocobo and a Green (mountain) Chocobo of opposite genders. If not, then simply reload the save and try again until you have the results you need. You will need to feed these two chocobos 40 Sylkis Greens each and race them until they are both Rank A this time.

Once they are mature, breed them together with a Carob Nut and you should get a Black Chocobo (it does not matter which gender it is). Once this is done, head over to the Northern Continent and go to the chocobo tracks west of the Icicle Inn. This is where you find Wonderful Chocobos. These are even less common than Great Chocobos. They only appear with two rabbit-like jumping enemies. If there is only one rabbit enemy or none, then it is NOT a Wonderful Chocobo.

I recommend catching a bunch of Wonderful Chocobos, which will take some time given their rarity. Once you have a few, head back to the Chocobo Farm and you should have at least one that is the gender opposite to your Black Chocobo. Feed both the Wonderful Chocobo and the Black Chocobo 40 Sylkis Greens each and then race them at the Gold Saucer until they are both Rank A.

You will now need to obtain a Zeio Nut, which can be obtained only by stealing them from Goblins. Goblins can only be found on Goblin island, which is one of the northerly islands just south-west of Round Island (where KOTR summon is found). it is the odd-shaped one with the forest on it. Once you have a Zeio Nut, head back to the Chocobo Farm and SAVE YOUR GAME. Go in and breed the Wonderful Chocobo with the Black Chocobo using the Zeio Nut and you should get a Gold Chocobo. If not, then reload the save and try again.

The only other way to get a Gold Chocobo is to beat Ruby Weapon and then speak to the Kalm Traveller, but you pretty much need KOTR to beat Ruby, and the only reason to get a Gold Chocobo is to get KOTR (aside from the achievement) so this is the easiest and quickest way to get a Gold Chocobo I am afraid. It should not take too long, however. If done right, it should only take 4-8 hours.
