As simple (and as difficult) as picking the Wilky May starmap (the only one intially available to you) and getting from one side of it to the other successfully.
It doesn't matter what condition your ship or crew are in when you reach the starbase so long as you have at least 1 Hull and your captain has 1 remaining HP.

You'll also get the following achievement for the first time you complete this starmap:-
Orion TrailMission AccomplishedThe Mission Accomplished achievement in Orion Trail worth 10 pointsSuccessfully Reach the Galaxy Force Starbase.

Due to the randomly generated nature of each map and the crew you're allowed to choose from, it's difficult to be more specific with this. However, a few tips worth noting that should work across all playthroughs and starmaps:-

    1) Try to specialise in 2 skills, and keep a third as backup.
    - By this, I mean pick crewmembers with a value of 2 or 3 in any particular skill and keep adding to it with each subsequent crew until you reach a value of 6 or 7. Anything beyond that simply increases chances of Criticals. It's better to start diversifying at this point (bringing up your next lowest skill) because chances are your next encounter will require it.
    - Generally speaking, it seems at least one Bravado (purple), Diplomacy (Green), and/or Attack (Red) option tends to crop up more so than the Science (Yellow) or Tactics (Blue) options. Take this with a grain of salt - it may be different across your playthroughs than mine.

    2) When going on away missions, pick a crewmember with a skill level of at least 2 but preferably 3 (any skill) to maxmise your chances of surviving the encounter. It's also important to always have at least 8 to 10 total crew else you won't be able to go on an away mission with a decent chance of survival. If this crewmember survives the mission and increases one or more of their skills as a result, keep using them for the rest of the map because they will only improve your chances.

    3) Plan your route carefully - you can click ahead to see the potential rewards and risks for each destination before moving ahead. Also, occasionally there will be space stations / ships which allow you chances to improve one of 4 skills, to heal up your main crewmembers (at a cost of 30 food for +1 HP for each person) and to trade resources.

    4) Don't be afraid to quit and restart if you don't like the initial crew options - If the maximum you can get any 2 skills to is 5, it's usually best to start with a new batch especially on the later maps. You'll want to get those skills up to at least 10 by the final map, trust me.

If you've got any other tips or suggestions, please add them in the comments and I'll update this guide (and the others linked to it) and credit you for the info.
